ETHICS OF GEOENGINEERING
The Centre for Changing Climates, alongside CEPPA, brought together expertise in climate science and ethics to address this topical issue, with presentations by GFC steering group member Prof Andrea Burke and visiting Professor Stephen Gardiner, and follow up discussion.
LAND CLIMATE WORKSHOP
Climate change over land is critical for human society, yet poorly understood, due to the competing influences of different factors, including vegetation, topography, and atmospheric dynamics.
VOLCANIC IMPACTS ON CLIMATE & SOCIETY (VICS)
Volcanic eruptions exert a major forcing on Earth’s climate and have repeatedly perturbed human society through history. St Andrews hosted international researchers and policy experts to examine the lessons these events can provide for climate science, societal response, and hazard management.
COLLAPSE OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN CIRCULATION: CAN IT, HAS IT, WILL IT?
Initiated and led by GRC steering group member Graeme MacGilchrist, with Director Rae and international partners, this workshop brought 60 of the world’s leading experts on ocean circulation – spanning dynamics, observations, paleo, dynamical systems, and modelling – to examine the future fate of the Atlantic’s circulation.
PEOPLE’S EMERGENCY BRIEFING
The Centre for Changing Climates contributed to the People’s Emergency Briefing screening and panel discussion, hosted by Transition St Andrews, as part of a series of PEB events across the UK.
SUSTAINABILITY SHOWCASE
Hosted by sister centre STACCS, the showcase brought together initiatives in sustainability, environment, and climate at St Andrews. This allowed relationship building and a better understanding of the breadth and complementarity of different initiatives.
THE IPCC IN A CHANGING CLIMATE
As part of Sustainability week, the Centre for Changing Climates hosted a popular afternoon of research talks and discussion on The IPCC in a Changing Climate, featuring IPCC Chair, Professor Sir Jim Skea, alongside leading thinkers on climate at St Andrews across multiple disciplines.
CLIMATE WRAPPED
Inspired by end of year playlists, the GRC reviews the year in climate. An interactive presentation and quiz, held in the beautiful surroundings of the Laidlaw Music Centre, covered all things climate 2025 – broken records, societal impacts, and progress in solutions.
CLIMATE SCIENCE SCOTLAND
To address this need, the GRC for Changing Climates hosted a two-day workshop to connect expertise and kick-start collaboration between researchers from across Scotland. Presentations spanned disciplines including atmospheric dynamics, ocean circulation, paleoclimate, and climate impacts. Discussions identified new modes of collaboration, providing the critical mass to boost the impact of climate science in Scotland.
