OVERSHOOT

Overshoot – 5 November 2025

“Overshoot” describes the idea that climate goals might be exceeded and then recovered at a future date. Although the plausibility of future recovery remains questionable, overshoot has become implicit in many of the emissions pathways used by the IPCC. In “Overshoot”, leading climate scholars Wim Carton and Andreas Malm (both of Lund University) discuss how overshoot scenarios became mainstream, and the potential and the risks of this approach.

Wim Carton joins the Centre for Changing Climates and CEPPA to discuss this work, through panel discussion with Mara van der Lugt, James Rae, and Derek Ball.
