PAST OCEANS INFORM OUR FUTURE
25-27 August 2026
The ocean plays multiple key roles in the climate system, yet its future evolution remains uncertain. One key limitation to our understanding is the short duration of modern observations, which make models of potential future change hard to ground truth. Paleo records, from archives such as sediment cores and corals, offer the potential to extend our knowledge of oceanic change, yet are typically underexplored by the community working on modern to future oceanography. Likewise, the
conceptual advances made in modern oceanography are not always picked up on in paleo. This workshop, funded by UKRI and organised by GRC members, aims to bridge the gaps between the sister disciplines of modern and paleo oceanography by bringing together leading experts from each field.
